There are as many reasons for people to begin MUNing as there are stars in the sky. Read how be.boosted founder Rima-Maria Rahal stumbled into her first MUN experience, and how she thinks about MUNing now.
How did you begin to MUN?
How did you, esteemed reader, get acquainted with Model UN? I bet there are as many reasons to begin MUNing as there are stars in the sky. For instance, my personal first step of my MUN-story was really a fortunate coincidence. More specifically, it all started with an unimpressive black and white handout advertising the opportunity to join my alma mater's MUN team. I didn't even find this handout myself, but it was handed to me by a friend, who thought I would appreciate the opportunity for a well-funded trip to Singapore. At that point, I did not even have a really clear idea of how MUNs work, or what one would actually do there. As it turned out, this was the point where my MUN-story kicked into gear. A few days later, I made my way through an assessment center, and was officially on my way to Harvard WorldMUN in Singapore. Looking back, my start into MUNing was basically driven by the desire to travel, and to meet interesting people in the process of doing so.
Certainly, wanderlust and the desire to meet exciting people are not the only reasons why people begin to MUN. For sure, you could begin to MUN because you enjoy talking, because you think it's fun to role-play, or because you have a knack for international relations and foreign affairs.
MUNing to become a future global leader
However, if there is one thing that I learned during my (by now quite long) MUN-story, it would be that MUNing does more for you than to "only" give you pleasure. For me, MUNing has become a startling learning opportunity, and a great vehicle for personal growth. I would even say that MUNs are a superb platform to learn what it takes to be a future global leader. Several like-minded MUNers and I have therefore decided to fund a new type of MUN initiative, where we strive to make the vast potential of MUNs more readily available, and to unlock the potential of MUNs to shape future global leaders. This is - essentially - how be.boosted came to be.
A declaration of love for MUNs
At the end of the day, MUNs are pretty much like a magic lamp: whatever your desire when you knock on a MUN's door, you can be quite sure you will find it fulfilled. There is lots to love about MUNs, and I would say it is up to you to figure out what your heart's desire is when it comes to MUNing. For those driven by wanderlust as I was during my first MUN, MUNs abroad offer a unique opportunity to explore new territories. If you are up for meeting exciting people, you might want to go to a large-scale international MUN, where you still run into delegates you hadn't met yet on the last day of the conference. Once you decide what you want to get out of your MUN experience, you only need to find the optimal place to get it. For those who want to make the most out MUNs' potential for their personal growth as a future global leader, I think I also know just the right place to start ;)
